GenAI bias awareness

The learning objective of the workshop is to raise awareness of design ideation and provide participants with an opportunity to reflect on their own design practice through the use of ideation tool, including ChatGPT, a generative AI tool. Yet GenAI visual and textual outputs tend to downplay bias through reflecting largely western cultural, scientific and political contexts. Indeed, bias is already represented from the fact that the majority of designers, both in professional practice and education, are drawn from western, industrialised, educated, rich and democratic populations. Overlooking or underestimating such biases, highlight the need for participants to critically interrogate how culturally and linguistically diverse GenAI output really is, notably when the workshop includes participants from non-Western background.
