The question how AI might augment human ideation is complex not least because the dynamic nature of AI technology. But even cursory observations and conversations in design settings, both in education and professional practice, reveal the limitations to how AI may contribute to innovation. For example, given the the vast size of data sets it can draw on, and its speed of operation, does AI produce quantity of over quality of creative ideas? With focus on efficiency and optimisation of the design process, does AI facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. And does it promote collaboration between designers and their clients? Or, when efficiency is a clear goal, how does AI respond to human emotions? While uncertainty remain in the early phases of the design process, that is, ideas, concepts and proposals, what emerges in these conversation is that AI will not replace the human designer who will continue to assess and validate creative outcomes, and make final decisions.
